What is a Registered Clinical Social Worker (RCSW) in BC?

When people hear the word social worker, they might think of someone who helps families connect with resources or supports in the community. While that can be a type of job some social workers do, Registered Clinical Social Workers (RCSWs) in British Columbia also provide specialized mental health care — offering counselling and psychotherapy for children, youth, adults, and families.

As a Registered Clinical Social Worker, my role is to help clients improve their emotional well-being, strengthen relationships, and navigate life’s challenges through evidence-based, compassionate therapy.

In British Columbia, the title Registered Clinical Social Worker is a protected professional designation regulated by the BC College of Social Workers (BCCSW). This means that anyone using the title RCSW must meet the College’s strict standards for education, supervised experience, and ethical practice.

To become an RCSW in BC, a clinician must:

  • Hold a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from an accredited university.

  • Complete at least 3,000 hours of supervised clinical practice post-graduation.

  • Pass a clinical board exam and meet all registration requirements of the BCCSW.

  • Commit to annual ongoing professional development and adhere to the BC College of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

This registration ensures that clinical social workers are accountable to the public, operate under clear professional standards, and maintain a high level of competence and integrity in their practice.

RCSWs are mental health professionals who view well-being through a holistic and contextual lens. We understand that a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are deeply connected to their relationships, environment, and life experiences.

In therapy, this might mean helping clients:

  • Work through anxiety, depression, or grief.

  • Heal from trauma or difficult life transitions.

  • Strengthen communication and relationships.

  • Develop coping skills and emotional regulation strategies.

As a Clinical Social Worker in BC I have taken training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Play Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy and always tailor treatment to each person’s age, goals, and needs.

Choosing an RCSW in BC means choosing a therapist who is:

  • Professionally regulated by the BC College of Social Workers.

  • Highly trained in both clinical and relational aspects of mental health.

  • Grounded in values of equity, respect, and social justice.

  • Committed to ethical, evidence-based care that considers the whole person — not just their symptoms.

Many extended health plans cover counselling and psychotherapy services with an RCSW, and fees may also be eligible for reimbursement through the Medical Expense Tax Credit in Canada. If you’re seeking therapy for yourself or your child, working with an RCSW ensures that your care is grounded in professional ethics, clinical expertise, and a deep commitment to your well-being.
